Myna Music
September 27, 2010

I am currently checking out a very promising new service called Myna Music by Orpheus Media Research which makes it easy to discover music using music.

Given the subjective nature of tagging, the usual way to search using metadata (keywords, tags etc) does not always return the best results, You can take a look at some of the user generated tags used in LastFM to see how crazy and irrelevant some of them are.

Myna on the other hand is based on music theory and cognition research. Greg Wilder, founder and Chief Science Offer says, “Music expresses emotions that can’t adequately be described with words, and now, for the first time, Myna allows the music to speak for itself.”

You start with a seed song and the system analyzes the mood and texture of the track against a specified music catalog. Take a look at this video to see how a playlist is generated with songs that flow well together:

Radio programmers and film/TV music supervisors will definitely find this very helpful and for individual use, it will be an easy way to create the “perfect” sounding playlist for your next dinner party.
